Get ready!
Once you have signed to your Bikeathon Kidz event, and you have done some great fundraising, it is time for you and your mates to start getting prepared for your cycle ride!
The most important thing is to be safe. Below are some guidelines for you to follow, and what better advice than from two World Champion Cyclists, Rob Haynes and Vicky Pendleton.
Get your bike and equipment prepared:
- Helmet: make sure you wear one at all times.
- Bike:make sure your bike is working well. It is important to look after your bike and keep it clean as a clean bike will work much better.
- Handle bars and saddle: make sure they are secure and at the right height for you.
- Tyres: pump them up - tighten the valves and make sure there are no punctures.
- Pump: do you have one and does it work properly?
- Wheels: make sure they rotate freely and that wheel nuts aren’t loose.
- Chain: clean it - oil it - and check it’s not slack.
- Pedals: do they turn easily?
- Brakes: if pads are worn - replace them - and make sure they don’t rub against the wheels as you ride.
- Eat a Big Breakfast: get fuelled up in the morning and don’t forget to bring a drink with you. Bikeathon Kidz events can be thirsty work!
- Dress for the day: do not wear anything that might get caught up in your wheels – think comfortable and practical.
- Check out the weather report – you may need a waterproof jacket - or sunglasses. And remember if you have a helmet wear it!
- Capture some memories: remember to bring along your camera to catch those all important action shots. Send them into us so we can put them in the Bikeathon Kidz photo gallery.
